In his rookie year, Josh Freeman threw a handful of interceptions at Carolina playing against the Panthers. The following year, Freeman was flawless as the Bucs beat the Cats to climb to 2-0. Josh Freeman learned from his mistakes, and he has a lot of ammunition from 2011 to fall back on for next season.
For starters, Freeman is a young QB, closer in age to the currect crop of rookies in actuallity. But Josh Freeman is entering his 3rd season as the entrenched starter, and first training camp since his 2010 masterpiece. There are no safe positions on the Bucs roster thanks to new head coach Greg Schiano, save one: Josh Freeman's.
No.5 is the man at One Buc Place, and hes only less of a man because he has shed 20 pounds off his already quick frame down to 235 pounds. He has spent tons of time with new OC Mike Sullivan and QB Coach Ron Turner, but maybe the biggest lesson learned from last year was the gun injury that backfied on the Bucs for concealing from the league.
Freeman actually hurt his thumb on the last play of the Bears game in London, but the Bucs had a bye week and the team did not have to report it. But during his bye week, Freeman shot guns at a gun range and suffered from an ill-timed recoil injury known as a slide bite. It produced a deep laceration on his throwing hand that the team covered up, unsuccesfully.
Josh Freeman has never been a ghost during offseason workouts, from his rookie season he was a film watcher and student of his craft. But in 2012, he will have to rebound from a poor performance when he threw 22 interceptions to only 16 touchdowns, or his drawbacks comeing out of college of being inaccurate will only resurface with more vigor.
Schiano believes Freeman has taken too much of the blame for 2011 on himself. Instead, the new Bucs coach is instilling an attitude of new system, new coaches, new people, starting over from scratch.
